habitats

"Home.Dreams.Every night I have the same dream, happy dream, that I go back to my childhood home. It was the biggest house of the neighborhood, also the strangest.
I was proud of the strangeness. and ashamed too, depending on who saw me entering its front door, for it was actually three structures in one. Most embarrassingly, a beauty salon run by my mom, and my aunt lil. A big cube of home. A chunk of happy home. White block. House. I can't stop dreaming of this home. It changed since we sold it. Keeps changing in my dreams. New shapes ,similar, but confusing.Smaller, longer, darker, lower, older, bigger, but never just my....home. Home. Home. The dreams are sweet. Back home. Back home.

My Winnipeg". Guy Maddin, 2007
I focus on buildings and houses of the alleyways in HCMC which I called Habitats and reflect on them as a representation of their inhabitants. The spontaneous way they are built and the vernacular elements the people use to decorate them is an open channel of communication between the people of the alleyway and I. The methods used were assemblage, subtraction, repetition and addition.
